Cabane à Sucre

Well, it looks like I may be defeated in this "free updating" blog journey. I may have to succumb to the higher powers of $money$ that charge for services.

How is everybody out there? Have you survived most of winter? How about Valentine's Day? I personally like to celebrate after, since the prices are too hyped, I am not fond of the waiting in lines and crowds etc., so I ask my hubby to celebrate a day or two after.

This past weekend we tried our hand at the French celebration called Cabane à Sucre. (Cabin of sugar or sugar shack) where traditionally cabins were erected and sap was tapped from the maple trees. We boiled our maple syrup to just before 238'F and then had the kids make a trough of sorts in the clean snow, I poured the syrup in a line along the snow, and with popsicles ready, they wound up the syrup onto their sticks to create - tire d'érable - Sticky maple taffy. Yum! It worked and I was so impressed. Yes, you do need to use a thermometer for the boiling part, stirring constantly.
We enjoyed a hot fire outside, some roasting of hot dogs and then a soak in the hot tub. Fun family times.
